Diane L. MacDonald, founder of It Takes a Village Wellness, and Rachel Costello, takesavillageowner of Yo Re Mi Yoga, came together to create Yoga Builds, a children’s yoga certification program for anyone interested in sharing the benefits of yoga with children, preteens, teens and special needs youth. Together, MacDonald and Costello have more than 30 years of experience as yoga practitioners and teachers.

Our youth are increasingly subjected to a tremendous amount of stress, nonstop activity, overstimulation, expectation and pressure. Many of the messages they receive can result in unhealthy competition, negative self-talk, poor self-esteem and perfectionism. These behaviors and attitudes often create conflict in our homes and schools and challenge our teachers in the classroom.

Yoga and mindfulness activities naturally support children and teens’ progression through physical and emotional developmental milestones. Mindfulness activities focus on using breath and allow time to practice stillness and self-regulation. The physical poses of yoga assist in building gross and fine motor skills, coordination, balance, flexibility and strength.

Studies have shown that yoga in our classrooms can enhance learning; heighten mental, social and emotional health; and improve sensory processing. In our homes, doing yoga together relieves stress, cultivates a sense of well-being and creates a deep connectedness among family members.

This unique training program focuses not only on teaching yoga classes but also teaches participants how to develop and utilize daily short sequencing to achieve a particular benefit. Yoga Builds was designed specifically for parents, classroom and special education teachers, yoga teachers, therapists and social workers.

Level 1 training will take place in Brooklyn September 23 through 25 and will also take place in Port Jefferson on September 30 through October 2.

Level 1 25-hour training provides participants with Yoga Builds certification. Combined with Level 2 and Level 3 trainings, Yoga Builds participants can receive a master teacher certificate and a 95-hour RCYT certificate recognized by Yoga Alliance.
