Sandy: A Wake-Up Call

Marilyn Chiarello, founder of A Taste of Light, attended a Healthy Planet event two days before Sandy made landfall. Helen Caldicott and a panel of nuclear experts spoke at this event and addressed the potential disaster that could occur along the east coast where at least 16 nuclear plants lay in the storm’s path. Indian Point, the same model as Fukushima Daiichi, is less than 50 miles away from Long Island.

“There is no doubt that severe weather events are occurring more frequently,” explains Chiarello. “Yet the topic of climate change and the dangers of nuclear energy were absent from the presidential debates. Both candidates supported nuclear energy as ‘clean’ energy, even though mining and enriching uranium produces a huge amount of greenhouse gases and there is no way to effectively deal with the increasing amounts of nuclear waste.”

Chiarello encourages individuals to stand up for sustainable energy. She says, “While living a healthy lifestyle is important, there is little we can do to counter the effects of radiation, which has a cumulative effect in the body. It is time that we unite to support alternative sustainable energy options, and work toward the elimination of nuclear energy and weaponry. Perhaps we will look back at Sandy as a wake-up call.”
