New York College—It’s Unique

“Did you know we are nonprofit?” asks Barbara Carver, director of admissions at New York College of Health Professions, in Syossett. “That means that all the tuition money that we receive goes right back into our school.” Yet this is not all that is different about this school. New York College has been a pioneer in holistic health and wellness for 30 years. In addition to the Syossett-based main campus, there are three locations in New York City.

The college is accredited by the New York State Board of Regents and Commissioner of Education. This means that all credits from the degree programs are transferable to other colleges and universities within New York State as well as to schools in other states. The Master of Science in Acupuncture and Master of Science in Oriental Medicine are accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM), which is the recognized accrediting agency for programs preparing acupuncture and Oriental medicine practitioners.

Aside from the accredited acupuncture and Oriental medicine degree programs, New York College offers certificate programs in various holistic disciplines, including massage and holistic nursing. With a survey of reported career placement of more than 90 percent in their field, the alumni are happy as well.

New York College is equipped with its own clinic at both the Syosset location and the New York City locations. The Syosset location boasts the largest clinic of its kind, offering massage and Oriental medicine at nominal fees. This allows the student to get clinical practice under the watchful eye of a teacher and at the same time serves the mission of the school, which includes giving back to the community. Student-performed one-and-a-half hour acupuncture sessions cost $30 ($20 for seniors) and 50-minute massages cost $35 ($20 for seniors).

Because New York College believes in a strong scientific background, students are well versed in both Western and Eastern medicine. This allows them the ability to have an informed and well-rounded approach.

New York College has many plans for the New Year, including classes open to the public in areas such as women’s self-defense and ayurvedic nutrition.
