“So many women have come to my of ce wishing to lose weight; sleep better; get rid of anxiety, pain, headaches; and every imaginable health goal,” says Dr. David Pollack, of Pollack Wellness Institute, in Commack. “Very early in the conversation, I ask them about their menstrual cycle. ‘It’s normal’ is the response at least half the time, if the answer isn’t ‘Omg, it’s horrible.’”

It is actually those that say “it’s normal” that Pollack is most concerned about. “Many women, and perhaps those around them, commonly associate that time of the month with mood swings, pain, discomfort and other less-than-desirable symptoms and feelings,” he explains. “I would suggest that while this is common, it is not normal. I know, I’m just some guy saying I know how your body should work. I promise, I say this from the (indirect) experience of hundreds of women who have worked with me who were themselves shocked as their cycles approached normal.”

So, what’s normal? According to Pollack, a normal cycle should be four to ve days of bleeding without any extra spotting days. It should not be heavy or too light. The color should be red to bright red, never blacking or rusty, and there should be no clots of any size. The monthly cycle should be 28 days every time; 27 or 29 is acceptable, as long as it is consistent. And there should be little to no pain or cramps.

Pollack says that some of his patients have referred to their menstrual cycle as a “nonevent.” “I know this can be hard to believe for some, but, in most cases, this change to being like a nonevent is very achievable.” In addition to the bene t of having that time of the month become much easier, many of the previously mentioned issues, such as weight, sleep, mood, energy, digestion and many other common ailments, often resolve when the cycle and its hormones are balanced.

“We have helped women with even quite extreme menstrual issues achieve great results naturally,” says Pollack. “This can be achieved using a multipronged therapeutic approach, including enzymes, nutrition, dietary modication, acupuncture and moxibustion, detoxi cation and soft-tissue therapies. Your health can improve, and often more easily than you think.”
