Dining Out for a Neighborly Cause

With the knowledge that scores of people affected by Hurricane Sandy are still struggling to rebuild both homes and businesses, restaurant owner Jay Jadeja decided to take action in hopes of helping his fellow neighbors.

Back in April, Jadeja’s restaurant, West East Bistro, partnered with the Nassau Hurricane Recovery Fund (NHRF) in pledging to donate 20 percent of its proceeds each Wednesday to help local Sandy victims through September. Diners can now enjoy all-natural/organic food and drinks while supporting the community in need. “The food I serve is a reflection of who I am,” states Jadeja, who also says: “Community and family is rooted in whole food. Therefore, this pledge was a natural one for me and this restaurant.”

The NHRF was created by Nassau County executive Edward P. Mangano in November 2012 to collect and organize donations and distribute them to victims of Sandy. Priority is given to those applicants that are not entitled to reimbursement from FEMA, do not have homeowners or flood insurance and are not receiving assistance from other government relief programs

Mangano said that he is hopeful that the funds collected through the fund will provide some peace of mind to those in need. Nassau residents lost not only home and property, but also income, as destruction from the storm closed roads and businesses for days afterward.

Support the NHRF each Wed. through Sept. at West East Bistro, in its dining room, at the bar or for takeout. West East Bistro is located at 758 S Broadway, Hicksville. For additional information, please visit Apps.NassauCountyNY.gov/recoveryfund/.
