What is Tao Cycling

Tao means “the way,” or “the path.” Confucius began a theory that there is a natural way for humans to live and that way is by incorporating the principles of breathing with physical exercise, philosophical ideas and meditation. Tao cycling combines these practices and offers them in local gyms and yoga studios.

Tao cycling is the blend of movement and meditation; the fusion of mindful spinning and stillness in meditation. Tao cycling combines inner fitness and outer fitness. “I have a strong belief that every success physically is always a victory within,” says owner of Tao Cycling John Hinrichsen. “Our physical life gives our spiritual path a boost as we stare in the face of our inner concerns of fear, self-doubt and courage, along with a host of other concerns that affect our growth as people. Tao cycling aligns the mind, body and spirit, and is a type of exercise were you can connect to fitness goals and life goals and work on them together.”

A typical 45-minute Tao cycling class consists of an intro—five minutes of “stillness,” where the rider’s intention is set; a 30-minute challenging indoor cycling ride—what John calls "meditation in motion"; and a cool down, consisting of a 10-minute “seated meditation.”

“One of the things that is great about Tao cycling is that there is no judgment, and no indoor cycling experience is needed.”
