Today the method is known as Pilates, but the creator, Joseph Pilates, called it "contrology". He believed that through physical fitness one could achieve happiness in its broadest meaning. This philosophy is reflected in coordinated and balanced unity between body, mind and spirit. Pilates understood what it means to have balance in life. It may surprise you to know that he began to develop his protocols as early as 1914! These carefully thought out exercises have surely stood the test of time. Today, the Pilates method has even been adopted for use by physical therapists, because of the proven results. His approach was years ahead of his time.

Now, more than ever, there are countless exercise disciplines to choose from. So, why Pilates? Basically, because it was designed to develop the entire body uniformly. Though the emphasis is on the core, it is a full-body workout involving strengthening and stretching, and we know these are crucial to flexibility and injury prevention. The nature of the protocol of Pilates, or contrology, is meant to bring balance and discipline back to our lives by helping individuals attain the ability to control and improve their bodies through discipline and better exercising habits. The rewards can be monumental; translating to a feeling of wellbeing and an elevated spirit. This is the marvelous by-product of elevated endorphins that are released into the body easing pain. When we are pain free and mentally balanced, we can cope better with stressful situations. And deal with our daily challenges better. It is our responsibility to ourselves to reduce our stress levels in our lives to become happier and healthier people.
