The correlation between rheumatoid arthritis and gum disease is undeniable. One German study published in the Journal of Periodontology concluded that individuals with rheumatoid arthritis had a higher incidence of gum disease than those that do not have the disease.

In individuals with autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system responds to false triggers, causing inflammation. Gum disease is also a form of inflammation and could be a possible trigger for other inflammation throughout the body, or vice versa.

Since there is a direct link between gum disease and rheumatoid arthritis, it stands to reason that the treatment of one would help the other. This is why proper dental and gum care is so critical in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases.
