“My Doctor Says I’m Healthy!”

“Over the years, I have heard some version of this line dozens and dozens of times,” says Dr. David Pollack, of Pollack Wellness Institute, in Commack. Many of his patients even suggest their bloodwork is normal or only a bit out of range when their blood test results return in the high ranges.

“While I commend the positive attitudes,” says Pollack with a laugh, “there must be some disconnect regarding what ‘healthy’ constitutes. Health, or rather a state of wellness, is actually defined by the World Health Organization as an
“active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. …a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Pollack adds: “There just seems to be an epidemic disconnect with this concept. One of the largest cancer treatment facilities in Long Island has bowls of candy placed ubiquitously throughout its facility despite knowing that sugar can cause increases in the growth and prosperity of cancer cells. Virtually every study suggests elimination of sugar for best cancer outcomes.”

Patients need to start to take personal responsibility for their health. Pollack asks us to consider the following questions: Does healthy mean having normal basic bloodwork? Does healthy mean taking medications that create normal or near normal bloodwork? Have you ever known someone that never had a single inkling that a heart attack or cancer was soon upon him/her? “Many of us have firsthand experience with a friend or relative that only weeks before a serious health decline thought they were truly healthy,” says Pollack. “But, of course, this wasn’t so. Cancer does not generally come out of nowhere, and neither does a cardiovascular event. No matter what your current health state is or where it has been, you can always change your health, often in far greater ways than you might believe.”

Pollack shares a recent experience he had with one of his patients, whom he describes as a 45-year-old with two kids who runs a large business. Within the past two years, he had lymphoma and subsequent radiation therapy, a significant cardiovascular event and open heart surgery, and severe gastrointestinal reflux. Besides those significant health traumas, he complained of dismal energy, inability to workout (loved it previously), and constant pains throughout his body. During the consultation, he stated that his doctors blamed much of his current issues, many of which are not listed, on side effects of radiation. “Within our two months of focusing on his health with a trained professional, this man is now GERD-free without his previous medications, full of energy, beginning to workout again, enjoyed watercraft sports on his recent island trip, and no longer complains of body pains,” says Pollack. “This is possible, real and not unusual. But you must want it, and be willing to take it. The first step is not accepting that out of range blood tests are fine; the second step is seeking a doctor’s input.”

Pollack says that reversing our current health state is obtainable and asks us to “get this year on the right track and change our life indefinitely.” He adds: “This is not about fad diets, short-term weight loss, or gimmicks and magic pills.
It is about systematically correcting the deficiencies of your body’s functions and achieving total wellness.”
