Is Milk Good for You?

Getting adequate milk on a daily basis is something that is drilled into the heads of Americans from birth. Almost every diet encourages milk consumption and most Americans get their milk in a carton from the grocery store. It is important to consider where this milk comes from and whether or not it is actually good for you.

Regular, non-organic milk, for example, may not be as good for the body as is traditionally thought. The animals that produce this milk are not moving, are grain fed instead of grass fed and may be injected with bovine somatotropin Posilac, which makes cows produce three times as much milk as they naturally would. The result of this increased production is less CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), one of the most important cancer fighters, in the milk. Milk from free range cows has five times as much CLA as regular milk.

In addition, milk from free-range cows also contains an ideal omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids ration and natural milk simply tastes better.

Another problem with regular milk is pasteurization, which kills bacteria that are necessary to digest milk. It is healthier to drink unprocessed milk, provided that the cow is healthy, the milk is not contaminated, the container is clean and the milk is fresh.

To be safe, Dr. Kalitenko recommends that individuals stick to organic milk, preferably from grass fed cows. It is more expensive and more perishable but the health benefits are definitely worth the costs.
