Tips to Reclaim Space for the New Year

It’s time to get off on the right foot for the new year by de-cluttering, organizing and nally reclaiming our space so we have more “room” for what matters most in our life.

Professional organizer Patty Barr, founder and owner of The Elegant Organizer, which services clients from NYC to Montauk, offers the following organizing tips to help make our life easier, simpler and less stressful.

Clothes: According to Barr’s “3 H’s principle”—hold, help and heave—we should hold onto the things we need and use; help by donating items we no longer use; and heave by throwing away items that are stained, broken or chipped.

Computer files and email: Unsubscribe to the email blasts that we no longer want to get and delete old computer files.

Kitchen and pantry: Purge all items out of these areas and start anew. Zone the items into “like” items, such as canned foods, pastas, spices, etc.

Bedrooms: Utilize under bed storage for shoes or accessories that are seasonalbed-1158267_1280 and perhaps purchase a bench for the foot of the bed that can be a functional sitting area and open up for additional storage.

Linen closet or hall closet: Hooks, hooks, hooks. Utilize the inside of the door for additional storage for hats, scarves and small umbrellas.

Holiday and seasonal items: Put these items in bins. This can be daunting for anyone as we always learn we have too much. Donate things that are not needed to schools or churches.
