Hormones and Digestion

Hormones are the chemical-signaling mechanism of the body. They control and proliferate the commands and intention of the nervous system; orchestrating the events of almost every function of the body. Unfortunately, many of the stresses of today’s world can breakdown the ability of the body to produce, balance and respond to these important messengers. Stress, toxicity, poor nutrition and physical injuries can weaken hormone production over time. These all require our hormone systems to constantly react and respond in order to bring the body back to homeostasis. It is a very demanding process that typically cannot keep up indefinitely.

As our body changes each decade, a decline in function often comes along with it. Especially as we approach our 40s and then 50s, the stress, toxicity, poor nutrition, physical injuries and now changing biorhythms cause deleterious effects to our hormone production mechanisms, which begin to crash. It is more obvious for women than men, but both sexes have similar responses.

Declining hormone production causes a wide range of symptoms and common disease complexes. From the symptoms of fatigue, sleep issues, anxiety, depression, brain fog, weight gain, sugar cravings, aches and pains, decrease libido, hot flashes, wrinkles, hair loss or changes, and memory issues, to name a few. More serious and related issues can develop as well, such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, high blood pressure, urinary dysfunction and many more.

These issues are all fundamentally caused by changes in hormone production, balance or interpretation, and can be both prevented and often significantly reversed if not eliminated. The key is to systematically access and treat hormone production from nutritional intake, digestion, absorption, production, processing, demand, recycling and elimination. Each step is as important as the next.

Just applying a hormone cream or replacement often will not fix hormone imbalances as there are innumerable places that these problems can result from. Utilizing hormones in isolation or even in small mixtures will not adequately reproduce what the body would do if it were working normally. There are many ways to stimulate hormone production, but it is paramount to first repair as many aspects of the body as possible to ease the hormone-balancing process. Always use the aid of an experienced holistic practitioner when attempting to deal with hormone or digestive problems.
