Upon walking into Om Sweet Om Yoga, in the charming village of Port Washington, one gets a sense of warmth and welcome. The space is different from other yoga studios in that it is laid out more as a
healing center where visitors can retreat not only for an hour session, but a whole day. Special services include Reiki, natural esthetics, massage therapy, wellness chiropractic, holistic pediatrics, and even a service called BrainCore neuro-feedback therapy, which naturally helps individuals of all ages suffering from headaches, insomnia, ADD, PTSD and other neurological conditions.

In terms of yoga, the studio’s offerings are varied and extensive, providing ample opportunity for Iyengar, ashtanga, restorative, prenatal, gentle, foundations and more; making it fitting for beginner, intermediate and advanced practitioners. A yoga boutique is also on premises with mats, mat bags, props, candles, jewelry, essential oils and every- thing else a yogi might want.

There are three rooms for practice, and I was lucky enough to join the spacious prana studio—meaning “life force”—for a Chakra Rhythm Healing workshop. This two-hour workshop, led by Elyce Neuhauser, of Elyce Yoga Trance, featured live drumming by George Schultze, of Spirit Sky. Through yoga, free-form movement and intention, attendees explored the second chakra, svadhisthana, associated with the water element and its connection to the feminine and spontaneous flow of the body. Also was the experience of the third chakra, manipura, and its ability to ignite vital fire, confidence and sacred power.

Through liberating sequences and a percussive sound healing bath, I felt spine-tingling relaxation. I was powerfully guided by Neuhauser into a place of strength and manifestation, which helped me attain a lasting, positive perspective on personal challenges.

This is but one example of what one can experience when one steps foot into Om Sweet Om Yoga. Even if from outside the area, an experience at this gem is worth the trip. One can even make a day of it—like I did— by paying a visit to the historic Sands Point Preserve just five minutes down the road.

A youthful, glowing look; lustrous hair; and a fit figure are goals that Chinese medicine (acupuncture, herbs, Eastern nutrition) can assist a person to achieve. Here are five objectives to help beautify a person from the inside out and naturally postpone and reduce the aging process.

1. Delaying mental and physical aging. Acupuncture and herbs can improve circulation, regulate internal organs, such as the kidneys, and enhance circulation to the skin and hair. By boosting the kidney channel with herbs, acupuncture and Eastern balancing foods, one’s aging process can be slowed down and reduced.

2. Regulate hormones. Acupuncture and herbs can balance the hormones. Symptoms such as insomnia, hot flashes, irregular periods, depression, low energy and irregular weight gain can all be addressed and reduced.

3. Maintaining supple young skin, reducing existing wrinkles, and inhibiting future wrinkles and acne. Acupuncture, jade treatments, herbs and Eastern nutrition can create soft, lustrous and spotless skin. Acupuncture is used to stimulate acupoints—the sites through which the qi of organs and meridians can flow to the body surface. Stimulation of points can regulate the function of organs and meridians and enhance circulation in the skin.

4. Boost balance. Auricular acupuncture can boost the immune system, increase brain focus, help memory and manage weight (reduce excess pounds in order to increase energy and balance appetite).

5. Create long-lasting effects. The practitioner will work with the client to add foods, herbs, exercises and rituals that can address a person’s imbalances. TCM herbs and foods that are often prescribed for anti-aging include ginseng, Solomon’s seal rhizome, wolfberry fruit, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, ginkgo leaf, dates, raspberry fruit, angelica root, fleece flower root, black sesame, Ganoderma lucidum and pollen. Ingredients used in combination include giant Typhonium rhizome, peach kernel, Dahurian angelica root, Ledebouriella root and Biond magnolia flower.

You are unlikely to stay young by simply focusing on skin or physique or mental conditions. Only a comprehensive and holistic approach can help you achieve any substantial effect.

One of the challenges in getting a good night’s sleep is choosing your perfect pillow. There is no one-size-fits-all pillow. In fact, choosing the wrong pillow can increase headaches, neck pain, numbness in shoulders and arms, or create sneezing and wheezing due to allergens and chemicals.

Your focus should be to find your neutral alignment, where your head sits squarely on your shoulders without bending or reaching. There are several decisions to make when purchasing your perfect pillow.

Most experts say that children should not use a pillow at all since their skeletons are still forming and their little necks are delicate. Although once a toddler leaves his or her crib, a small, lightly filled pillow would be acceptable. Another concern is what’s inside the pillow. Bliss Sleep Center recommends staying away from memory foam and other synthetic fabrics since they can contain numerous chemicals that can lead to many health issues. It is best to find a customizable pillow where you can control the level of filling inside the pillow.

What material inside your pillow works best to support your neck, back and spine properly? Some examples of popular fillings for pillows are as follows:

Kapok – is resilient, conforms to your head and neck, hypoallergenic, and mold and mildew resistant. Kapok tends to have a soft feel like down pillows, but is much more supportive.

Organic buckwheat hulls – provide gentle support and will cradle your head and neck perfectly. Great for people with neck and back pain. As an added benefit, buckwheat hulls are hypoallergenic.

Pure virgin wool – is hypoallergenic, a dust-mite repellant, is body-temperature regulating, and resistant to bacteria, mold and mildew. Pure wool is great for people that sleep hot or cold and also helps prevent allergens.

Organic cotton – great for people sensitive to chemicals and allergies. Organic cotton is slightly softer than typical cotton and makes for a very comfortable traditional pillow feel.

Natural latex – is dust-mite resistant, hypoallergenic, mold and mildew resistant, and contours to your neck. Natural latex pillows can be firm or soft depending on the method used to create the natural latex (Dunlop or Talalay) and the amount of fill.

Things to think about are what level of firmness is best for you—soft, medium or firm—and what position do you sleep in—on your side, back or stomach?

Back sleeper – tends to need a more solid, supportive pillow. A good rule of thumb should be to keep your neck evenly aligned with the rest of your spine.

Side sleeper – tends to like a pillow that fills the neck- to-shoulder area without overextending the neck. Some things to consider is where do you place your arms when sleeping on your side. Kapok is Bliss Sleep Center’s most popular fill for side sleepers.

Stomach sleeper – tends to either use an almost flat pillow or no pillow at all. The key is to not put strain on your neck and shoulders. In fact, some people use a small pillow tucked under their stomach to avoid pressure on their back.

The best way to choose your pillow is by testing it out in the position that you sleep in at night. Attention to detail is a must when choosing your perfect pillow.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the heart, xin in Chinese, houses shen—the “spirit” or “mind”—explains Joseph Cheung, physical arts director at New York College of Health Professions. If an individual’s heart energy is strong, not only is his or her body strong, but so is the individual’s spirit and mind. If the heart is deficient and the blood doesn’t pump optimally, the person’s spirit may be weak. This is often signaled by dull eyes, pale skin and feeble limbs.

Heart Meridian. The heart meridian has nine points that start in the axillary under the armpit and go all the way to the tip of the pinky. A related meridian is the pericardium meridian, which is physically a membrane that surrounds and protects the heart, which starts on the chest and continues on the medial side of the arm to the middle finger. In energy healing, pericardium 8 on the palm is a very significant energy point and is utilized to balance energy of the heart, mind and spirit.

The Secret. According to Cheung, the best things one can do for one’s heart are:

Qi Gong and Tai Chi. very important because if one moves energy in the body, it strengthens the energy of the heart. The blood carries qi, or life force energy, so when one circulates one’s blood, one improves one’s energy flow and, ultimately, one’s state of mind. Tai chi is a movement-based, gentle martial art. Qigong is the “yin” to tai chi’s “yang” as it is more stationary, utilizing meditation and deep-breathing techniques.

Acupuncture. When an acupuncturist takes a pulse, he or she can feel the state of the heart. This holistic treatment can target points in the body where qi is blocked and release stagnation and tension throughout one’s physical, emotional and spiritual systems.

De-Stress. Anxiety is the main factor that affects a person’s heart, spirit and psychology. Any way that an individual can breathe and relieve stress at work or in everyday life can help enrich his or her heart.

Be Happy. Have a positive outlook on life and understand that whatever happens, happens.

Like the panda says to the peacock in Kung Fu Panda 2, Cheung reflects, “You’ve got to let go of the stuff from past—because it just doesn’t matter!
Mercury toxicity is a hot topic and often an even tougher thing to explain. There are believers on one side of the equation that have seen firsthand what mercury toxicity can look like, and then there are those that disbelieve, citing that they have seen countless people with “a mouth full of metal” live their lives healthfully and into old age. Perhaps, as we are finding with so many diseases, there is a genetic factor?

Appears so. Scientists have identified several genes that cause increased susceptibility to mercury. One of them is called CPOX4. In the initial Children’s Amalgam Trial, researchers broke the study population into two groups— those that had composite fillings and those that had mercury fillings—and set about to see the impact the mercury had on the children’s health. The study was inconclusive. A study done in 2012 looked at a subset of 330 children from the original Children’s Amalgam Trial, conducted in Portugal, and found that about 28 percent of them had the susceptible variant of the CPOX4 gene.

Rather than simply averaging the results of the amalgam group and the composite group, the researchers looked at the correlations between urinary mercury levels and neurological test results. Among boys (but not girls) that had the CPOX4 gene variant, the researchers found several significant neurobehavioral deficits associated with increased mercury exposure.

Three other studies also re-examined the data from the Portugal study. One study found evidence that amalgam fillings are a “significant chronic contributor to Hg [mercury]body-burden.” A second study found that children with the CPOX4 gene variant also had biomarkers of mercury-related kidney damage. Still a third found neurobehavioral deficits in children that had two other gene variants that made them more susceptible to mercury. These studies form no concrete conclusion, but illustrate more must be learned about the effect of mercury on the bodies of children and adults as well as genetic predisposition for ill-health effects of mercury.

Uh-oh! Both my parents and in-laws have been married so long that if the above statement is true, their “chemistry” would have evaporated roughly 60 years ago. Yet, both couples remain happily married to this day! How have each of their relationships lasted so long? I often wonder. They are very different couples with very different relationships, yet both marriages have stood the test of time. How? The answer came to me when reading a quote by eHarmony co-founder Neil Clark Warren in this month’s feature article, “Happily Coupled,” on page 36. “Seventy-five to 80 percent of all chemistry evaporates within six to eight months”—and here is the kicker—“unless the relationship is significantly undergirded by deeper and more durable compatibility.” Could it be that simple? Really? That’s it, the relationships are founded on deep compatibility?

The article goes further to explain that relationships not founded on compat- ibility, quite frankly, can’t stand the test of time. So, in essence, time can truly be the enemy of most relationships! I’ll be honest, I am not surprised; time is tough. Something that causes wrinkles, saggy boobs and slows our metabolism is, in my opinion, a real bitch! But time has its good features, too; it allows for healing, change, understanding, reflection and growth. If chemistry is a simple 20-page fairy tale, then compatibility is more like a thousand-page novel; those pages representing the passage of time. Both fairy tales and novels are wonderful in their own ways. Successful relationships need to be both.

This talk of time makes me miss the 20-year-old me. She had no fear; she had endless energy; and … yup, you guessed it, she had GREAT boobs! I imagine sometimes my husband misses her, too. And not just her boobs. Forty-year-old me can sometimes be a hot mess, forgetting to breathe during her son’s wrestling match or daughter’s gymnastics routine; snapping at her children when she is on
a work call; and some days too tired and stressed to remember to kiss her husband good night. Forty-year-old us is not 20-year-old us. That’s okay, because my 40-year-old husband is not his 20-year-old-self either (hello, hair loss). Yet, we have gone through time simultaneously, 26 years in total, and have had more ups than downs; but, yes, downs. Sometimes the way to plow through the downs is just doing that: Plow through and never give up on one another’s aging self.

I believe marriage is good for your heart (see Health Brief on page 16), and that if you are in a relationship that may be facing compatibility (or chemistry) issues, before making the leap to the latest fad of “conscious uncoupling,” how about using time to help the relationship? Spend some time with one another and rediscover those areas of compatibility you had when you first met. What made you both laugh 20 years ago probably still makes you laugh now, even with all your “evolution.”

Compatibility is simply the match that lights the flame of chemistry between two souls evolving through time together. Don’t believe me? Go back, examine your relationship, talk about the things you have in common (besides the kids!), laugh at what makes you so compatible, and then … like magic … voila … “chemistry.”

When you meet Barbara Meyers, it’s easy to see she has a giving spirit and enthusiasm for life, simply by the way she smiles. This amazing woman is married to Pete Meyers, and together, along with their dear friends the McCarthys, they started the Long Beach Polar Bear Club and the club’s annual Super Bowl Sunday Splash to benefit the Make-A-Wish foundation (MAW). Married for 26 years, the Meyerses have their hands full, both with work and raising their four children, ages 11 to 22. Yet, every year at this time, they turn their attention to a project close to their hearts, the popular Polar Bear Splash.

So, how did it begin?

In 1998, Pete Meyers and Kevin McCarthy were neighbors, and soon close friends. They decided to jump into the ocean on Super Bowl Sunday just for fun. Members of both their
families were there to cheer them on.

“It was frigid,” shares Meyers, recalling that fateful day. “The coldest day since the event began. Blustery. Snow andsand blowing all over. Well, that was the beginning. The next year, there were 18 of us, myself included, and the Bradley family also joined that year. Mike Bradley and Patty Bradley had lost a child to cancer. Their son, Paulie, passed before he was able to receive his wish from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. By the third year, we realized that this crazy event was snowballing! We knew that this group of insane members could really benefit some type of charity, and with the Bradleys already being a part of this kooky club of polar bears and their connection with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, it seemed to just fit perfectly.”

The event has grown to be one of the biggest in the country. Why do you think that is?

“It’s magical. I think that it really comes down to the children. No child should be sick. No child should have to face lifethreatening diseases. Unfortunately, this happens, and we all just want to make them feel better. We wanted to do something in Paulie’s memory and have this jump mean something. That is where the Make-A-Wish Foundation came in; it made sense to partner with them. I also think that the magic of the most incredible city on Long Island—Long Beach—and its residents, as well as all the surrounding communities, really helped make it such a success. It is contagious. One person tells two friends. They tell two friends, and it turns into one enormous party on the beach in the middle of the winter!”

Have you met any of the children that may have benefitted from the funds that your event brings in?

“We have had a chance to meet with some of the children at various events. We also have many kids that are Wish alumni that attend the Polar Bear Splash and even jump in the ocean.

”What is your primary role organizing this MAW Polar Bear Splash?

“My role has been pretty general. I do a lot of organizing, getting together volunteers, and basically anything else that may arise. Part of our fundraising is selling sweatshirts and T-shirts each year. Every year, they are a different color, and, for some reason, people just love them! They have to have the new color every year. For the first several years, we were selling them from our home. It was difficult with small children as there were strangers coming to our home constantly. One of those strangers was your husband, Kevin. He would arrive at our house every year on Polar Bear Eve to pick up sweatshirts. We would be very busy getting ready for the next day, but ended up sitting on the couch chatting with him. Every year, I’d tell him, ‘Kev, don’t forget to get your stuff early.’ No, he always showed up the day before the event. That is how friendships start! We now have our
printer, EVAN Creations, sell them. You can pick up your gear from their store in Rockville Centre.”

How much have you raised for MAW?

“We have raised over $4 million, and if this year continues as others, we are looking at raising over $5 million in total. We are their biggest non-corporate donor! We also receive so much support and services from the city of Long Beach. They have truly been terrific.”

Any words of advice for first-time jumpers?

“If you are participating, just make sure to get your head and feet warm first! Hats and warm socks. And have fun!”

Bacteria are allowed to stay overlong and multiply or even spread backward from the colon into the small intestine. The results may include constipation, bloating, abdominal pain, fatigue and even anemia, because iron and vitamin B12 are absorbed here.

Allopathic medicine usually kills off the overgrowth with antibiotics that tend to stay in the intestinal tract. The small intestine is then reseeded with healthy probiotics to establish the proper balance of gut bacteria essential to the absorption of nutrients and the production of some natural vitamins.

Steven Frank, founder of Nature’s Rite, advises that as a more natural alternative, some naturopathic practitioners are using an enhanced aqueous silver colloid to kill off the overgrowth before reseeding. According to the Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine, after using either technique, it helps to ingest herbs such as plantain, licorice, marshmallow and slippery elm bark, as well as aloe, to heal the damage.

Annoying sinus infection? You don’t have time to be sick.

During the winter, more people get sick because colder weather forces us indoors, where we have a lot more contact with individuals in closed areas. Our bodies are made to protect us from getting sick, but it’s hard when other factors—lack of sleep, stress, coming off a recent illness—increase our risks.

Here are simple steps you can take to help boost your immune system and stack the stay-well odds in your favor:

Sanitize and Disinfest Your Surfaces

It’s probably common sense not to shake a sick person’s hands when you want to prevent a cold, but that’s far from the only place that you can pick up germs. A recent study looked for the presence of viruses on surfaces and found that the flu virus was found on as many as 50 percent of surfaces. So, consider sanitizing and disinfecting your surfaces to minimize your exposure to germs and help prevent colds and the flu.

Control Humidity

Cold viruses thrive in dry conditions. Dry air also dries the mucous membranes, which can lead to a stuffy nose and scratchy throat. Excess humidity can cause fungi, mites, molds, mildew and other sick makers to thrive. Artificial heating tends to be very drying, so you may want to buy a humidifier to keep your air moist enough that it doesn’t dry out or dehydrate your sinuses.

Medical studies indicate that maintaining your home’s humidity restrains the survival of various viruses, including influenza, polio, measles and herpes.

Drink Clean Water

Staying hydrated will keep your body strong and ready to fend off cold germs and flu viruses. In fact, one recent study found that drinking plenty of water may boost a particular immune response to enable your body to better fight the viruses. But is your water clean? Get your water quality tested. Drinking unfiltered water can do more harm than good. Consider a water filtration system to ensure you and your family are getting the purest water needed to feel your best.

Purify Your Air

We spend more than 90 percent of our time indoors, where our air is five times more toxic than our outdoor environment, and, in some cases, the air measurements indoors have been found to be 100 times more polluted. Inadequate ventilation is a primary cause of indoor air pollution and is why pollutants rise in homes during the winter. An air filter, especially a HEPA-type filter, can help remove air- borne dust and germs that cause cold, flu, asthma and worse conditions over time.

Contact a healthEhabitats environmental expert at 877-861-3662 to schedule a healthEhome evaluation to test your home’s air, water and surface quality.

A year to investigate some things you are hoping to improve, such as your diet, your energy level, and maybe your thinning hair. EBJ Skin Care Center, of Malverne, has a solution to hair loss that is unlike other treatments. Awaken laser therapy is safe and effective for all hair types. Everyone with a hair concern can benefit from Awaken, which offers solutions without surgery, side effects or chemical treatments. Awaken provides an effective cosmetic solution for alopecia/pattern baldness, chemically or chemotherapy-induced hair loss, and weak and thinning hair.

The frequency and the number of treatments vary depending on the extent of one’s hair loss. After reviewing the client’s hair-loss history, hair density and scalp health, EBJ staff will decide how many treatments are necessary. It is important before starting any hair restoration process to first determine if it can work for you. EBJ offers a free consultation and hair follicle analysis to determine if the Awaken system will work for the individual client.

Please note: Awaken for beautiful hair and skin is not intended to treat or diagnose any medical problem or medical condition. It is not meant to replace any professional medical advice or treatment. Clients should always consult a doctor with any medical needs.
